How many rolls of wallpaper for a 12x12 room?

A 12x12 room with 8 ft walls, one door and two windows needs 9 standard rolls of wallpaper (20.5 in by 33 ft) with no pattern repeat.

Count strips, not square feet

The net wall area is 333 ft² after taking out one door and two windows. But wallpaper is hung in vertical strips, and offcuts are rarely long enough to reuse. So the calculator works in strips.

Each 20.5-inch strip covers about 13.7 ft² of an 8 ft wall, so 333 ft² takes 25 strips. Each strip is cut 100 inches long (96 inches of wall plus 4 for trimming). A 33 ft roll is 396 inches long, which yields 3 full strips. 25 strips ÷ 3 per roll rounds up to 9 rolls.

Pattern repeat adds up fast

With a patterned paper, each strip has to start at the same point in the design. A 21-inch repeat makes each cut 121 inches, and a 33 ft roll still gives 3 strips. A 36-inch repeat pushes each cut to 136 inches and drops the yield to 2 strips per roll, so the same room needs 13 rolls. Enter the repeat from the label and watch the count.

Single vs double rolls

US wallpaper is priced by the single roll but usually sold in double rolls. Nine single rolls means buying 5 double rolls. Check the label: some European papers are 20.5 inches by 33 ft per roll and sold one at a time.

Accent wall instead?

Papering only one 12 ft wall is a common way to try a bold pattern. That is 96 ft², or 8 strips, which is 3 rolls without a repeat.

Same lot number

Buy all 9 rolls at once and check that the run or batch number matches. Colors shift between print runs.
