How many boxes of flooring for a 12x12 room?
Check it with your own numbers
Open the Flooring Calculator with these values
| Room length | 12 ft |
| Room width | 12 ft |
| Waste | 10 % |
| Coverage per box | 20 ft² |
| Price per ft² (optional) | 0 $ |
| Boxes needed | 8 |
| Flooring with waste | 158.4 ft² |
The order
12 × 12 = 144 ft². Add 10% waste for end cuts and you need 158.4 ft² of flooring. At 20 ft² per box, round up to 8 boxes.
Check the box label
Box coverage is all over the place. Here is what we see most often:
| Product | Typical ft² per box |
|---|---|
| 12 mm laminate | 15 to 17 |
| 8 mm laminate | 20 to 24 |
| Luxury vinyl plank | 20 to 24 |
| Engineered hardwood | 20 to 30 |
Enter the exact number from the label in the calculator. Using 20 when the box holds 16 would leave you a box and a half short.
Don't forget the closet
Many 12x12 bedrooms have a closet that needs flooring too. A 2x6 reach-in adds 12 ft². That can push you into a ninth box.
Waste factor by layout
- Straight lay, planks parallel to the long wall: 7 to 10%
- Herringbone or chevron: 15 to 20%
- Room with lots of doorways or a hearth: 12 to 15%
Start each new row with the off-cut from the end of the last row to keep waste near the low end.
Underlayment and trim
If your flooring has no attached pad, underlayment rolls cover about 100 ft²; buy two. For trim, you need the room perimeter in quarter round or new baseboard: 48 ft, minus about 3 ft for each door opening.
Acclimate the boxes
Stack the 8 boxes flat in the room for 48 hours before you install. Laminate and engineered wood expand and contract with humidity, and skipping this is the usual cause of gaps and buckling a month later.
